This short video (3:41) goes a long way towards explaining why things are the way they are at a lot of corporations. I definitely have worked with some managers who unwittingly subscribe to these theories.
Dr. E.L. Kersten of Despair, Inc. identifies seven signs of a demotivated workforce and explains the benefits of each.

Like great art, this post by Darren Hobbs will long be remembered as the one that described Java in a way that most anyone can appreciate :-)

Also if you already have any programming experience with Java it will make milk shoot out of your nose, even if you aren't currently drinking milk!
