Search nearly working... 1

I nearly have the search working the way I want. The word count it generates is based on words only. HTML is stripped as is any content between <code> tags. I notice that the current live search in Typo looks at the html content when making a match. So if you see any articles coming back with an empty Snippet block("") it is because your search matched something in a generated URL and no actual words in the article.
I am working on the best way to handle this behaviour. Maybe just list the links that appear in the article or provide a count of them.
Also I will be making hyperlinks in the balloons functional. I created new graphics for the balloon to see if IE will correctly display the new GIF (I knew PNG support in IE was bad, but this was my first personal encounter), I will know in a little bit when I get to work and can check it out in IE...
By the way the concept for this method of displaying search results is all Dunstan Orchard. I've just been making it work within Typo.

UPDATE1: IE is now showing search results. I had to resort to JavaScript, because of IE's limited support for CSS *:hover. Still looking at hyperlinks...
UPDATE2: Hyperlinks are in place amd working. For tags and comments also the snippet of text is now a link to the article.
UPDATE3: Added search term highlighting like Google Cache. This uses some JavaScript from: http://www.nsftools.com/misc/SearchAndHighlight.htm

Site update...

I updated my theme a bit, this one is either going to be called "Civil War" or "Feeling Blue". It is still in progress, however, so you may observe some more changes over the next few days. The Search is back and I modified the lightbox javascript a little bit too. I have a couple new sidebars in the works. Now running Rails 1.1 and a newer version of Typo modified to use less memory.

XSD is dead from a POX upon its house... 1

If you’ve experienced the Enterprise SOA push from vendors at the large company you work for, there is some seriously funny reading to be had over at Patrick Logan’s website. I read them out of order having neglected Patrick’s feed for far too long.

Anyway start with Bad Idea, It keeps on raining… and finish off with This is Enterprise Stuff Look Out. Patrick makes a quote worthy quote in the last one:

Yes, why list actual reasons why XSD is good when you can just claim the top of the hill and dare people to knock you off. I think you might fall down on your own.

Having worked with SOAP/WSDL/UDDI/SOA J2EE shops and the “fun” that could be had by implementing different vendors tool frameworks because of the supposed possibility to interoperate. .NOT’s doesn’t play very nice with Java’s All of these radical redeisgn projects are overhauling either Mainframe systems that continue to shove data down the wire as they have for decades. By cobbling together a standards based “confederation” of servers running the latest OS’s with more memory and better IO times to large SANs, and yet even with it all set up, the Mainframe often remains the core piece because no one knew that it did “XYZ” and we didn’t buy the right software from a Vendor for this situation.

Manager’s begin to go bald as costs exceed even the most out there cost projections for the project. Vendor Consultants are hired to come in and clean up the implementation. The begin by dissecting it and do design documentation. This design/discovery/recovery period goes on for awhile… Until finally, the Bald Manager, with only his eyebrows intact, cancels the project!

Too bad no one at the company would adopt a new way of doing things or even admit that SOAP/WS**/SOA stuff is really just an attempt to ressurect CORBA. Don’t get me wrong the Vendor’s dolled CORBA up with some XML implants and tightened up some of the old source code wrinkles. Made quite the sales pitch for the new *Sexy cO*rbA* and managers all across the globe fell for it again.

Thanks for letting me drink from the well of truth you have over there Patrick I won’t be neglecting your feed any longer.

Sorry about the theme change backout. I hosed it up bad in IE. Apparently the original stylesheets for Lucid only look good at the smallest font size on IE otherwise the various elements float all over the place.

I will continue to tweak and refine the look of this site. A Monkey inspired theme from me may be forthcoming! I may even resurrect the original GMail inspired layout from the pre-theming days of Typo…

Also I will post the second part of the Article Tagging series again soon.
